Holy Martyr Stephanie
Hand-repoussed (beaten) Rizas for Icons by Matushka Sarah
Since early Byzantine times, believers have commissioned master silversmiths to repouse and chase rizas to adorn holy images. Often this has been in response to prayers answered or in memory of a loved one or simply as an expression of love for a particular saint.
Indeed many beautiful miracle-working icons have been covered with silver rizas, meticously hand-beaten and inlaid with precious stones such as diamonds and pearls.
Today, this important and ancient tradition is continued by Matushka Sarah Gascoigne, an Orthodox Christian and jeweler living in Seattle, Washington. Matushka Sarah studied at the Central School of Art in London and worked in the commercial world of Libertys, Booty and Goldsmiths Hall in London. One of her pieces of her work is in the private collection of the late HM the Queen Mother. Matushka bases her work on traditional Russian Icons and her intimate knowledge of form and texture in nature.
Whether you are considering a gift for a wedding or special anniversary, for a friend or a loved one or as donation to a church, Matushka will take you through the planning process and produce a unique design for your icon.
Icons are hand-repoussed in silver and then gold-plated. Prices range from $600 to $2,000.
